Having that piece of paper that proves you're qualified for your field does not necessarily mean you're by extension qualified for the jobs in that field, much like how there's hundreds of terrible schoolteachers out there.
I agree. I meant qualification in the sense of being qualified to do the job. You can be self-trained.
Not to be good at it though. Plenty of underqualified people would be better than you at your job.

That'd just further get away from the point. Even if you are trained to do a very specific and complex job, like microbiology or some shit, there's definitely someone out there who can do it with dubious if not absent qualifications. The hardest part there is getting them to actually hire you for it if it's not your own independent work, which itself is not impossible but rather unlikely.

Doing the job better, I have no idea over how I don't know your quality of work beyond the anecdote of that student or whatever. He could end up a better person for the job for all I know with some on-site training if he has the right mindset and potential for it.
Getting qualified or smooth talking his way in though? That's completely variable.

Your focus on 'may' though has me inclined to say yes, as it's still within the realm of possibility. It's not like your job requires having an extra digit or something right?
