Doing the job better, I have no idea over how I don't know your quality of work beyond the anecdote of that student or whatever. He could end up a better person for the job for all I know with some on-site training if he has the right mindset and potential for it.

Your focus on 'may' though has me inclined to say yes, as it's still within the realm of possibility. It's not like your job requires having an extra digit or something right?

I guess I was mostly asking because I didn't understand what you meant. If he's saying that, given 20 years, he may be able to do my job better, then I don't really have much issue with that. Although, I'm not convinced it is necessarily true.

It could be 40 years for all we know, he never specified how much time it'd take him. 

I also wouldn't presume to know your job nor Chapo as a person well enough to make a reasonable guesstimate, so how long it'd take is really more on him to answer. 🤷

You don't think it's a little funny that he made these proclamations without actually asking me what it is I do?

I even gave him several chances to just retract it, ask me what I do, or admit that probably it wasn't a good idea; instead, he's remained uber-confident.

 I work harder than you. For most things that would be enough to do better than you considering what you’ve said so far in this thread. If you’re an engineer or a chemist I am wrong.

His choice not to serves to express how what your job is isn't what he's focusing on, how it's otherwise not his point (save for a recent self-humbling statement about engineers and chemists). 

Rather than getting lost in specifics, he's considering it purely off of the merit of hard work and putting the time in. If given the time, he thinks he can do a better job than you regardless of what that job is by merit of his own believed abilities.

This is also assuming you're really within one of those two occupational sets, rather than simply going with that as the narrative to win the argument. 

As is, he's still balancing on the merits of how he works harder than you, which based on his fry cutting prowess may very well be a true statement. He for instance did not doubt his ability to become a better sociologist than you, a better farm manager, or better 'any field' that isn't specifically those two. 

He understands that science is a thick gate to cross, but otherwise still sees himself as your better as a general statement.

All he really said is 'science is hard', arguably by the words alone this even leaves fields like medical open to interpretation.
