"Our analysis focuses on what most Americans would recognize as spanking and not on potentially abusive behaviors,” says Elizabeth Gershoff, an associate professor of human development and family sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. “We found that spanking was associated with unintended detrimental outcomes and was not associated with more immediate or long-term compliance, which are parents’ intended outcomes when they discipline their children.”
Gershoff and co-author Andrew Grogan-Kaylor, an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, found that spanking (defined as an open-handed hit on the behind or extremities) was significantly linked with 13 of the 17 outcomes they examined, all in the direction of detrimental outcomes.
“The upshot of the study is that spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children. Spanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do,” Grogan-Kaylor says.
Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor tested for some long-term effects among adults who were spanked as children. The more they were spanked, the more likely they were to exhibit anti-social behavior and to experience mental health problems. They were also more likely to support physical punishment for their own children, which highlights one of the key ways that attitudes toward physical punishment are passed from generation to generation.

Spanking is not physical abuse. I'm starting to question of you werr actually sexually abused as a kid or did you pull a blanc. Its pathetic to take attention away from real abuse victims.
Spanking is physical abuse- it's the loss of control of an adult letting out the frustrations on a child. You talk to them and make them understand what they did is bad- with words.
There is a difference between methodical spanking and crazy abuse. The parent should spank with love and feel empathy for the child that is being spanked, instead of releasing his anger.
"Boo hoo i was spanked as a kid i was abused! If thats the case, most of us have been abused!" makes people take real abuse less seriously.
How do you hit a child physically with love and empathy?
Spanking is physical Emotional reaction, and the emotion is not one of love.
It's called operant conditioning, to teach the child that there are consequences. Even when you're filled with love, you shouldn't spoil the kid. When you teach kids, you act on reason, not emotion.
I wouldn't trust you to raise a kid if you act your emotions around them, without giving them any order. You're the adult, not the kid.
It's a little weird to suggest that acts of violence are rational and unemotional, and more fitting of adult behavior than child behavior.
And even if that were hypothetically the case, when a parent hits a kid, it's because they want something from the kid, their compliance. No matter their intention, it instills the idea that violence is the way to get what you want. And that as long as you're more powerful, in whatever sense, than the person you're shutting down, you don't need to have a good explanation, nor do you need to hear the objections of the other side. I think it's a very primitive way to interact with anyone, much less your own child.

I mean I feel like physically harming the child will make it have violent tendancies as the child may learn that violence is how to convince people to comply
