Deaths by despair rising in the US

This is just a rambling post of thoughts and I'm just typing things i just heard in a documentary. So I dunno, I don't really have an opinion. It was just interesting and this is not very coherent.

Anyhow, suicides in the US are up 33% in the last 20 years. There were 47,000 suicides in 2017. AND more than 1.4 million Americans attempted suicide in 2017.

Suicide has become so rampant it's reversed life expectancy rates in the US for the past 3 years.

In 2015, a PNSA study indicated that middle-aged, white Americans were dying at a greater rate than ever before. Even as mortality rates declined in almost every major developed nation (with the exception of Russia), they rose steadily for the U.S., thanks to the uptick in suicides. American suicides are now at their highest point in 50 years - since the end of WW2.

Psychologists are at a loss to explain this but economists are weighing in on the cause

I sorta missed it but I think they said that feeling you can't get ahead financially can make you off yourself.

Other western countries face similar challenges that the US has faced but they aren't going mass seppukko?

So WTF is happening, Americans? Why you so sad?

A sense of community, on whatever level that may be, is important to the well-being of people. My hunch is that the increase in suicides and school shootings is due to disordered social systems that our culture produces. 1 in 6 Americans are on psychiatric drugs...doesn't that seem a bit high?

I think Americans have a system that separates people economically due to different reasons. There is no real safety net so this makes people sad and stressed.

Plus there are lots of fucked up crazy people in the US. In addition to the mental illness of suicides there are also a huge number of serial killers. I think the US ranks number one in the world.

If you look at the murder rates countries in the Americas rank pretty high. The US does not really stand out here though. 5 or so murders per 100,000 people compared to 19 for Mexico.

Maybe if you had a decent Healthcare system and didn't treat the mentally ill like some third world shithole then you'd have less suicides, just maybe

I feel that the debt and struggles with bills that most Americans face have a lot to do with living beyond means. It happens so often that people take out loans for things like college or a mortgage, with little to nothing to show for it in the end. Why isn't financial literacy being taught in schools, when it's one of the most important skills a person could have?

It also legal in the US to commit suicide. Believe me they won't put you in jail for it. :D
