They still need people to pilot those things (currently).

Not against people they see as "their own", especially when the military already is on a similar page socially about the current times. 

They're fine going to other countries where "US vs Them" is much easier to split apart mindlessly, but firing on their own people would take their enemy being something a little less close to home in their minds (hence why ninja weed smokers are an easier target to consider).

If we were nearly as insulated yet informed before as we are now, this would have happened instead during either The Red Scare or Nixon's era. 

The internet's changing the people, which in turn is changing the game. You can't take who people were then and put it next to who people are now and expect it to work one-to-one, especially when big corporate might be into the idea now when there otherwise appeared to be no profit in it before.

It's not, you clearly have no idea what "America" even is anymore despite living right next to it. 

If you were who you are now back in the 60s, you'd think the US would have never had a Civil Rights Movement, or to go even further back that they'd never have pushed through Prohibition over alcohol and, as we speak, marijuana. People can change their environment if they do so with enough hype and enough people, usually with the help of a martyr clause of some kind, as those in power need the people if they hope to sustain their position.

Movements are those things where people march in the street and wave banners and shout slogans. Sometimes they turn into riots where ppl break stuff and rough each other up a little. There are few if any actual deaths.
