This continued on into high school, where the one friend that he had would split with him.
I put the blame mostly on the parents, as any sensible parent should be active in their kid's life. If they were paying any attention, it should have been obvious that he was having some issues integrating.

If we're thinking about this in an evolutionary sense, typically men are the providers. As in, they provide resources (protection, hunting to provide protein and calories). And their objective is that they get some pussy. And women, because they are wired to raise children and survive pregnancy and child birth, are wired to aggrandize resources.
Things have played out this way since 500,000 years ago, and sex workers have been around since the beginning of recorded history. They just play differently in civilization where the rules are different.

To add further to that, the reason that women want or appreciate diamond marriage rings from men is that, while it is a nice gesture, it also displays to them that the man is an able provider. This is why many women flock to men of wealth, and also why they adore celebrities (a sign of social status in the hierarchy).
Human nature isn't that complicated when you break it down in terms of what we are as a species.

His nature still pre-disposed him towards Narcissism, so other problem areas in his life if dealt a different hand could have led him to a similar mindset.
It's not like everyone ignored and under-socialized turns out like Elliot. By comparison, I sympathize with Dylan Klebold over how horrible his parents were to him (especially his mother dear god).
