He was clearly under-socialized, and his parents failed to connect with him. As a result, he developed a narcissistic ego to compensate for the pain of not being able to socialize properly. Apparently he was diagnosed with autism, and by ninth grade he would cry at school every day because he was bullied. This continued on into high school, where the one friend that he had would split with him.
I put the blame mostly on the parents, as any sensible parent should be active in their kid's life. If they were paying any attention, it should have been obvious that he was having some issues integrating.
