Cat food was $9 for a bag of dry kibble, plus $8 for a case of wet canned food (12 cans) for when they got bored with eating the same thing all the time. That would feed my 2 cats for a full month. (The other one died in 2007 :() Surprisingly, the price of cat food has not gone up in 13 years.
Dog food is $13 for 6 cans, which lasts 6 days. Multiply by 5 to last the whole month. 14kg of kibble to mix it with costs $30. Not sure how long that lasts bc I haven't fed a dog since the 90s.
The prices seem roughly about the same when averaged together, but I usually stayed away from canned food. With only one dog it's affordable, but once you get to two or three the bags diminish notably faster. Opting for smaller pets also has the wallet feel a bit less anorexic.
Feeding a cat's thankfully been easy, especially if they're outdoor cats. They tend to pace themselves instead of needing feeding times like a dog, considering most dogs thanks to a history of neoteny practices just feel hungry by default.
My sister fed her stupid dog when I lived there. I had to clean its piss off the kitchen floor every morning at 5am and listen to it whine its refusal to piss outside for 2 hours before that.
What'd you do to try to train the critter to not piss on your floor, yell at it?
Did the dog not like getting it's paws wet? One of my dogs was like that and it just took getting one of those indoor dog boxes meant for apartments.
So I absolutely was not going to feed the obnoxious creature, too.
That's horrible.
Note: I don't see the cheap stuff on the walmart site anymore. Odds are good that my cheap ass gravelly litter has been completely replaced by clumping sand brands. Because manufacturers will make the shit that costs the most and not bother reviving brands that they can't gouge ppl for.
I typically use Chewy.com these days, and since COVID it's been one day delivery.
I agree though the clumping stuff's garbage, but I tend to see it just as much on the shelves as the non-clumping stuff. Otherwise with my cats able to do their business outside the litter goes away significantly slower.
And don't even get me started on the cost of vet care. Those guys are the worst gold diggers out of all of the health professions, imo. They're even worse than dentists. And nobody gives charity for vet care to people who want to own pets. That's viewed with the same sort of disdain as people who want to be poor and still wear lipstick or play video games. Pets are a luxury.
I guess the US can be thankful for groups like PETA, jeez. Guess there's one of the few reasons to be proud to be a 'murrican.
Here they still gouge you by insisting your pets need like 100 vaccinations, but if you grill into them they'll say which are essential. Otherwise announcing your level of income to them gives breaks here if it's a Vet that is supported by such programs.
The cat that died got attacked by one of my asshole neighbours and a garden tool. I spent over $2000 to fix him.
He died, anyway.
I'm sorry to hear that, but what inspired you to spend $2000 on an animal who couldn't do farm work or whatever?
Your choice makes perfect sense to me but otherwise contradicts your life model.
