Since you asked. I was at a swim meet and saw a girl on my team reading this book. I asked her if she liked it. She said it was required reading for school and that she didn’t. This intrigued me so I of course had to read it.
I was eleven.
I kept hearing people say they didn’t like it and I just didn’t get it.
It’s a pretty sexy novel. That’s not why I think he might not like it. Rather I think Caulfield’s stream of consciousness, and really his alienation and contemptuousness, are not for everybody. I mean, JD Salinger himself was a social recluse until he died. I no longer remember all of it, but I might still say it’s one of my favorites..
Chapo I might have to rethink my opinion of you if you say you have some passing familiarity with Holden Caulfield. It's not for everybody.
