There are weirder things when it comes to how people think or feel about these things. Well, it's a lot about feelings that turn into "thinking". I've heard the sentence "I care more about puppies/animals getting hurt than about people" many times. It is kinda common, and tbh I'd very much prefer to see certain people in pain myself over, say, a random dog.

Although it definitely is a matter of relatability (and stigmatization) it still surprises me how some people can feel so strongly for kids or animals and then be utterly uncaring when it comes to other people. Even if they don't actually behave this way in real life the rhetoric (and subsequent thinking) is strange to me.

I think it's normal to rather see certain people (that you dislike) suffer instead of a random dog. The two parties are not indifferent to you, since you actually 'know' one of them.

Depends...rarely would I give a crap one way or the other....but when I bother to, there is a reason for it.
