Heh, well... I'm always curious.
This, quite frankly, is very similar to my own situation. The only reason I sought diagnosis was in order to appease others' disharmony and questions. It may be detrimental in some ways, but it has also helped smooth certain interactions. Some can't abide uncertainty for long or too deeply.

Individuals have the habit of conforming themselves to labels they identify with, so it's best to go without.
If they only find like... one or two labels, yes. People tend to be a rather large series of them, showing a hint of uniqueness through it's combination, much like how a disorderly co-morbidity won't behave identically to just one of the two disorders.
People aren't unique or special, so people can be categorized. Self-awareness of the label can alter their behavior, but it doesn't have to. Labels also offer a means of streamlining relating to one another.
With this response I was considering the standard labels of SC (narc, socio, aspie, schizo, etc) and psychiatric conditions in general that others have attempted to tag or label me with over the years. There are some labels that I do tend to at least partially identify with and mentioned later in my response, such as researcher, teacher...
I think the biggest issue that I take with labeling and what I have been refusing to identify with has been the list of ever-changing psychiatric labels that I feel are little more than an attempt to make me feel as if I am in the "wrong" for not sharing similar viewpoints as, sharing certain values, or wanting those things that society and culture tell me I should. It's led to more than major inconvenience in my life and sub-par treatment received from the psychiatric community is what led me in to the line of work I am in now.
Don't apologize to me. People apologize too compulsively these days.
I know right? It makes it mean less every time it's done over nothing.
Ugh! I agree. It detracts from the value of the apology when something truly apology worthy occurs.

First validate if you are in a sour mood and see if this line of questioning is worth my participation.
Turncoat is analyzed in several places elsewhere. This is my thread.

I generally don't either and I am usually pretty blunt. However, job and situations do slide into adopting "covert" traits. I despise undesired disruption and I mitigate against it with pretty simple practices.
What do you mean by "covert" tactics?
