Your oversimplification of cell division and preprogrammed cell death are triggering me. That's not quite how it works. It an attempt to not derail a thread for once, I'm going to move on and say let's discuss this in chat sometime...

It doesn't matter sometimes how accomplished, useful, appreciated, or attractive an individual is. Abuse can have very profound and lasting effects on an individual. It creates sociopaths, doesn't it? It also molds some in to the opposite end of the spectrum, turning them in to shy, weak creatures with shattered egos and low self-esteem.

This isn't going to be fixed by a new hair cut. That only works on people who have some self-esteem to build on.

Can the way you tell her she's pretty be off putting?

Why do you need to understand her?

I see I am making too many assumptions. Maybe... just maybe it would be good to ask her what she thinks and have a conversation with her to better understand and discuss options. 

Someone above mentioned self esteem and shyness. She's not really shy. The only time she seems shy is when she enters into a new relationship.

I texted her and we got into a conversation. The topic of self esteem got brought up. Her words "I don't have a self-esteem problem"

OP only mentioned childhood abuse and supposed self esteem issues, manifested by the failure to accept a compliment, and the discussion went to the analysis of hopeless or severe cases?

WTF? No! No to a lot of your statements...

Recovery from abuse is not the same as anorexia and is not treated the same as anorexia in therapy. Anorexics know that they are not fat. They receive a neurological reward when they starve themselves and are perfectionists that see "skinny but could be improved".

It's not just that they've been told that they're ugly or tell themselves that they're ugly until they believe it. Trauma literally alters neurology. It changes the brain and affects cognition. Stress disorders are a real thing. 

We also don't know what the issue here is. Shitty self-esteem happens for a number of reasons, but if it's consistent putting on some make up isn't going to help. It will take a lot of work on her part to bring it up and really it's up to her.

Where did you hear in the news that a depressed girl was told by doctors to kill herself? I don't believe you. Link or it didn't happen.
