The choice to connect with others and who to connect with is up to the individual themselves.  

I know it sounds excessive, but it was the most intense birthday treat that I've ever had. My less sugar adjusted friends were bouncing off the walls like crazy people. 

Maybe you could just send a key lime pie his way, maybe he'd prefer that to a forum thread.

I disagree.  Perhaps he just doesn't know how to let people care for him.

I think I just misread him. I think he just does it because he does not value himself enough to let someone appreciate him. I don't think it is the case anymore and maybe he respects himself more than I know. It might be like you said he does not need to feel connected and appreciated to elevate his mood.
