Case Study - Moral Dilemma

I would prefer to try to convince her not to lie to the family and most likely would not lie for her. At some point the truth comes out or someone will find out what has happened and its just messy all around.

I wouldn't change her mind about the adoption if that's what she wants to do- some people are well aware that they wouldn't be able to take care of a profoundly disabled child and I wouldn't begrudge them that- but I don't want to lie for them and especially not with something so serious as the death of a child.

Haart: um is that the selective reduction? Does that only work with fraternal twins or can it be performed with identical twins?

She chose not to abort. She chose to give the child up for adoption but she doesn't want her family to know.

If you were her doctor, how would you feel about helping deliver two infants- alive- and then having the mother ask you to lie for her to her family about one of those infants? Would you lie to her family and tell them the child was dead? Simply because she was ashamed to tell them that she was not able to or would not be able to cope with a disabled child?

I don't get why I gotta tell the family anything if I am a doctor. I don't even have to talk to the family they are not my patient.

Because when it's known that you're carrying twins and only one comes home someone is going to want to know what happened to the other twin.

By telling the relatives the other twin has died you effectively stop them from wondering too much because the death of a child hurts, and it would be insensitive to ask the mother.  loved ones often want to know what's happening to the mother and the children and they'll go to the doctor or nurses for updates.

This mother didn't want her family knowing that she was giving one twin up so she asked the clinicians to lie.

Well the patient is fucked.

Wow. Remind me not to seek council from you in the future.

It would abort because of a mental disability.

Depending on which one, I would too. To be honest, I'd abort both of them and fuck until I had another child that didn't carry that risk.

It is only alive because it had a twin. Imagine growing up knowing you were only born because you had a twin. I get it is messed up. I don't think I can change the their mind.

That's not messed up at all to me. Not being born is something you'd never know, and knowing that you exist because of something doesn't change the fact that you exist.

My folks could have had around two other children, and because they didn't from them not wanting more than once child I do exist. If they'd chosen to abort again I'd not know the difference, so why should that matter?

I'm trying to not read the responses to this before I give my opinion. Was there a father listed on the birth certificate of the other child? Were the two in agreement?

I use to think that way... I use to think that it is not worth having a child with disability. I even argued it in class with some friends. I got a bad grade in my assignments afterwards because my highschool teacher told me she has a child with autism. I got pulled out of class so she could tell me about her autistic child. I felt bad because I can tell how much she loves her child. I might just be sad because I saw the sadness she had when she told me she would never abort her child. I am not so sure what is the right way to think. I think the best way is the way with the least amount of harm.
