I used to have it really bad as a kid. At one point it took me getting to the point of bleeding fingertips for me to even consider stopping it, seeing the moment of wondering "Could toe nails be chewed..?" be the obvious sign that there was a problem.
Theater training had us focus on obvious signs of insecurity where we'd be forcibly made to not express them. Nervous tells tend to break the illusion. I'm quite thankful for that alongside other factors that helped me appear more confident than I actually am.
I used to bite my nails a lot as a kid. Got this stuff to put on them so that they should taste bad. I don't think it helped... As an adult there have been periods where I've let my nails grow. Dunno why this is... Probably that I'm proud that I've got the self-discipline not to bite. As it is now, I tend to let my nails grow quite a bit and then bite. Not certain what I do... At least I bite my nails.
