Serious Discussion ; Is it ethical to cure autism?

Agree with your post.

I remember a really terrible video I watched here about an autistic violent (and self harming) kid and how his mother talked about it. Really shitty, unnecessary suffering that case, and those like it.

Pain and misery have known to inspire a lot though, and many times from the ashes of disasters better things were built. Suffering is powerful because it stirs and speaks to our most deep rooted fears, it gives motivation and pushes people into action, creation, adaptability. But the best things come out of suffering when we fight against it, imo.

It can be bad when it is overwhelming.

Bad for the one experiencing it? Yes.

Bad for the ones witnessing it? That depends on the audience.

I assume your inability to agree on good outcomes stems from being a German yourself. Regardless, how is he wrong?

As a general rule, a lot of wonderful things come out of suffering. And I'm not talking just about stuff like medical advances after the Holocaust, that's just a small example...

I want to see Ed saying this right into the faces of people who lost their loved ones in the Holocaust and then shame them for not seeing the wonderful advances we all benefit from that came from killing Jews, gays and whoever Hitler didn't like else XD

Now really, are you being fucking serious here?

Never thought I'd see the day you turned into a moral fag. Or was this yet another Ed nagging? Must say, I admire the effort put into making this marriage realistic XD

Are you?

He's talking about the potential for positive outcomes from situations that cause suffering or the suffering itself.  No matter which example he chose, there would be a victim to be offended because it's about human suffering.

And regardless of offense, why shouldn't he use this example?  Are we supposed to pretend nothing came of it, just because people suffered and died?  What good does that do them?  Acting like we shouldn't talk about the holocaust in anything other than the most somber light, is the kind of brainwashed, bleeding heart nonsense that I come to this forum to escape. I wouldn't say that to people who might find it offensive and have emotional reactions to it. It's polite not to. There are other topics to talk about.

I'm still right though. All the medical progress doesn't justify the Holocaust, but I don't see why it shouldn't be acknowledged.

Why would you bump this thread 4 months after it died?
