Serious Discussion ; Is it ethical to cure autism?

Edvard stated: source post

Not curing and supporting people's suffering because it might prove good/entertaining for the rest of the people/humanity is unethical as fuck. Might just as well support bringing back the Roman bloodbaths in the Colosseum.

Really Ed?  Roman bloodbaths?  Must you always twist what I say into some kind of mad hyperbole, just so that you have an answer for it?  Because obviously I'm talking about laughing at the mentally ill for sport. : P

Let me say this again, and I'll keep it simpler this time.

Many mentally ill people neither want nor need to be cured.

Let's see you twist that into Roman bloodbaths.  Overdramatic buffoon.

Definitely force mentally ill people to get a cure.

Irrelevant what it is. Even if they are not psychotic and capable of having a functioning daily life.

Why do you think they are called 'illnesses' then? Where do you personally draw the line between an illness and a personality trait?

"Many mentally ill people neither want nor need to be cured."

What kind of mental illnesses do you have in mind?

I am only trying to convey the benefits of a larger-spectrum gene pool for society.

As a general rule, a lot of wonderful things come out of suffering. And I'm not talking just about stuff like medical advances after the Holocaust, that's just a small example... Man has the gift to build upon suffering, grow stronger, learn, adapt, create. Both as a whole, as humanity, but also on a personal and individual level. There's a lot to achieve from struggle and pain, a lot of strength that wouldn't be there if there wasn't for weakness. Is it ethical to encourage suffering and pain then? I think we should always do our best to prevent it. Ironically enough, luckily for us, we suck at that.

There's struggle and there's suffering. I believe in the former but not the latter.

Someone who's speaking my language. I'd argue it's almost a requirement.

I agree with what you are saying here, to an extent.

I think suffering is good...as long as a person can evolve from the experience, for the reasons you stated.

It can be bad when it is overwhelming.

Being on the autistic or psychotic spectrum does not pre-dispose a person to be dysfunctional...whether they can function within society is a matter of how well they can cope. Certainly there are challenges associated with both. And sometimes you really are trumped by your DNA. And the same goes for all other people, truly.

I don't think it is ethical to encourage pain. Many people break under stress, and no one can be quite sure in what fashion they will recover (most handle a lot of stress poorly). I do agree with your premise. Negative experiences can be the most transformative—if we can handle them.

This topic doesn't seem very serious from the outset, but for anyone interested in bio-psychiatric disorders...

The psychotic spectrum has been correlated heightened social cognition.

The autistic spectrum has been related to achievement in the physical sciences.

Mood disorders have been linked to prominence in the arts.

This is not to suggest a person with autism will be a born-scientist. I am only trying to convey the benefits of a larger-spectrum gene pool for society.
