Basically, what they're typing may not be what they believe, but there is still a motivation behind why they are posting as they are. If they're playing a part, either the mask can slip at points or their actual self can bleed into the disguise when they aren't paying enough attention. Word choices carry subtext since there's so many ways of saying the same thing differently, and unreliable narration is one of my favorite styles of writing.

Plain? That's a first. I like it for it's variation in character traits between people and for watching how they interact and clash with each other when given the right incentive. This place also began as against it's own source material (the blog), which is something I have a guilty pleasure for in forums since it leads to the community making a life of it's own built on it's own history. When it's about "the author" it doesn't really develop beyond being in line with what the author's doing, while this place is instead a hotbed of strange behaviors and how they relate to other ones around them.

At the very least writing style and theme choices can sometimes betray subtext.
