Do any of you relate on some level?

I find the idea of being a lone wolf surviving an apocalyptic scenario as appealing as the ideas of being a mafia boss, hit man, CEO or cult leader and so on.

It has its own aesthetics. But given the choice of being any of these roles I don't think I would take it. I doubt I could feed solely on whatever it is that makes these images so exciting. Daily life would catch up and render it void.

What do you think causes these urges?

You put alot of emphasis on certain ideas and values which are rather a lifestyle than a necessity under the current system. But part of the lone wolf fantasy is to have no other choice than to survive or die. You could decide to live in the woods right now but the option to come back into society would make this experience "impure". It's like free climbing vs. aid climbing. Society is your rope and you can't get rid of it.

What a waste of time and money, sure if you have a hobby of going outside and having fun in the woods sure. Preparing for a disaster is stupid sense odds are you are not going to be particularly good at anticipating the nature of the disaster and due to this any preparation for the wrong one would render it useless.

Just keep in mind that you are doing this for fun and that it is not actually achieving anything. Otherwise, sure go play in the woods.

"Lack of opportunity/purpose in society."

Yeah, there really isnt anything to strive for than self improvement and becoming more wealthy. It gets a bit old at times.

"I am similar to you in a sense, however I do not plan on leaving irrationally, and am learning everything I need to in order to retire"

I don't plan on running off anytime soon, even discouraged that behavior in the previous post. But yeah, as soon as I have enough money to retire alone it's happening.

"Also, since you are my Canadian bretherin."

Nope, Merica. I plan on doing this all in Alaska.

Overall nice and informative post, thanks

After the stalking I've had these immense urges to be in remote/abandoned areas. I've always had them before but they're reaching new peaks recently. I've ramped up my workouts anticipating it, spent over $2,000 on survival gear and my rifle over the past 6 months. It's slowly consuming all of my interest and eclipsing my thought priorities. I'm still stuck as to why this is all happening.

The circumstances under all of this would wishfully happen would be any form of society collapsing, i couldnt just run off to somewhere remote it needs to be widespread. The enjoyment of something like this is the uncertainty and the danger, not knowing when is the next time I will eat, if I can survive the climate, what dangers lie in store for me. All of the resistance, life needs to be hard to live scraping by everyday off of what I know.

 Lack of opportunity/purpose in society.

If I were you, I'd start looking for the youtube documentaries where they interview people who have left the grid.

Most seem to share a recurring theme. They've had it with civilization, and could not deal with the abuse.

I am similar to you in a sense, however I do not plan on leaving irrationally, and am learning everything I need to in order to retire and maybe even die off the grid. If I am going to live off the grid, I plan on being a skilled enough engineer to build the grid out there. Seriously. There is really no other better time than the golden age of information to do this, imo.

There is one guy out there, who left basically because his employer wouldn't give him the summer off. He lost it. He was an engineer by trade, and built his own home, his own winery, and so on. He goes into the mainland, but he says the solitude drives him a little crazy. Totally understandable. I only wonder what the internet could do for someone like him, and I doubt that free satellite internet is an impossibility.

Pro tip. If you find any dead car batteries, search youtube on how to recycle them. All you have to do is add water, but you have to be careful.

Hey, next time you come across a building with the power lines cut, take the dish, nobody wants it.

You ever heard of CB radio? I dug one out of the trash the other day. It is a very interesting system if you've never heard of it. I've heard that with a proper set up, you can get 20 miles of distance. People used to use them all the time in 70s. I haven't seen a single person use one in my time.

Also, since you are my Canadian bretherin. I found this listing, maybe something you might want to watch. Even if it is just a detour.

Other than that, be aware of Crown Land boundaries, and the rules that go along with it. There are plenty of seasonally abandoned ranger stations out there that might be worth getting to know in the event of emergencies.

"sure if you have a hobby of going outside and having fun in the woods sure."

I do, these pieces of gear also had a dual purpose for military applications as well.

"Preparing for a disaster is stupid sense odds are you are not going to be particularly good at anticipating the nature of the disaster and due to this any preparation for the wrong one would render it useless."

Who said I was prepping for a specific disaster? It's all universal survival gear such as a sleeping bag, water proof tarps, bullet proof vests, 5-50 cord, water purification tablets, tourniquets and general first aid supplies. I know too much about this then to be one of those guys who worries about one event.  Survivalism is all about being prepared and being prepped for just one thing isnt at prepared at all.

"If you want to be away from society, you are obviously not enjoying being a part of it."

I can't just exclude myself from society, it needs to crumble down around me.

"The first thing you say is "after the stalking."

Yea, and matching this with what kappa said I've figured it out. It's an immense lack of purpose that leaves me craving a situation that's just as or more demanding of my attention as my stalking was.

"Go live in the wilderness if you want, but I think we both know that would suck ass. Technology makes life so convenient."

There has to be some sort of danger, living in the woods is already too simple and manageable after a couple weeks. I know how to survive out there and it honestly takes the fun out of the situation knowing I could just return to society when i wanted.

"You took a hit with the loss of your last object of love. How you move on beyond that, psychologically, determines not only who you are, but who you will be."

Yeah I understand it now from the pieces of feedback I've gotten. This whole undying ambitious need for challenge is just the last remnants of my obsession, when i quit stalking it left a huge void psychologically, working tirelessly towards a goal when in all I knew I'd probably never achieve it again. I'm simply taking that mindset and applying it to different concepts in life an it needs to stop, otherwise the stalking is essentially still continuing or the mindset at least meaning I'm prone to return into old habits.

Thanks for the insight from everyone

what do you mean by "stalking"? did you stalk people or were you being stalked? or were you staking animals?
