I looked into it a few times to be sure, the fact that it requires a blend of being somewhat believed by the subject to work and that it requires them to be a certain way in advance means "hypnosis" is little more than tweaking with the mentally unfortunate. It's no better than placebo.

Now, conditioning people to respond to cues, that's more real and works through reinforcement, not some dude making you be "very sleepy".

It's typically treated as a part of mentalism and it works for placebo reasons on people predisposed to it. It is mostly bullshit.
