My son did not suffer in that shelter at all. 4 months. Half of which was summer vacation. Good food and a much needed weight gain that looks great on his 6' tall frame.

by Xena on PF, 2013 Aug. 29I wake up in a shelter, or on the floor/couch that belongs to somebody who doesn't really want me around, and I suck back a protein shake. Then I start working out so my aging body will still be able to fight if I end up sleeping outside again. After at least an hour of that (sometimes more if I have to rest in between bc sleeping on the floor does such a number on my back) I start calling shelters, social workers, landlords, and often walk for a half hour or more to try to alleviate the floor sleeping thing. Sometimes I help my sister unpack/rearrange this godawful pile she just brought back from my mother's house. Jeez Louise, I don't even know why she wants all this crap. I feed my son and try to keep him occupied the best I can (poor kid is bored out of his mind. If I don't get housed soon, he'll have to live with my sister until the end of the school year when we can move to a smaller town where I can afford the rent.) I argue with somebody about their cracker attitudes at least 3x/week. In the last 3 months I've had to bite back on my violent urges about 6 times. I've had 3 screaming matches with my sister and had the cops called on me once. I usually go to bed exhausted from the exertion and the stress. I was so tired once that I didn't even make it to my mattress, but fell asleep in a chair instead. That's the worst part about training yourself to sleep in unnatural places and pretending to be awake for fear of getting arrested. Sometimes your body sleeps that way when it doesn't have to. People tell me I frequently sleep with my eyes open.
