What would be the incentive to have one? 

Lets look at it this way, you have goals and aspirations and often times these moral codes would be a certain hindrance, to doing what you want to do. That's the definition right? Something stopping you from doing what you have an impulse or a long term desire to do, otherwise its not a sacrifice with the justification of a moral code, then it is just living.

I mean sure, your moral code is a symptom of your society in the same way your goals are. But goals tend to be more selfish.

My moral compass broke a while ago, but I still have hopes that this diving rod will work someday.
