It's the fault of clinicians as well as parents who want to make their child sick instead of accepting that perhaps they were not born into this world to be perfect. it's just excuses. Of course don't tell your child they're not intelligent, that's wrong but don't take them to a doctor and make them slap a label on to make yourself feel better. It's just silly

A lot of the parents are scared into believing their kid will be a walking failure if not given pills, even showing extreme cases to them and saying "This is who your daughter/son will become". It's even worse when the kids are thrown into a harsh competitive environment and... oh... I dunno... show some fatigue and distraction instead of being little trophy wielding robots.

My private school had people falling apart at the seams from the heavy demand put on us, and instead of questioning the school they questioned the students. Many went onto pills and struggled more than before it.

I have a son who is going under observation as we speak for adhd. He also blurts out sounds (a bit like tics). He's so funny. I get him. God I love his unique gifts. One of his teachers say, I wish I can teach him outside with nature because thats his calling and him building stuff.

So I believe you are correct;  :-) we should sometimes question the school and it's teaching environments because we don't learn the same.

It basically has become what you typed, which is more the fault of clinicians than the patients themselves, but every so often there's those that fit the bill without them having to stretch it. ADD/ADHD is also a common misdiagnosis for other disorders that may display similar symptoms early on, which often makes for further confusion and often times being given meds that outright exacerbate their real symptoms (for example, a schizophrenic on uppers), but it also robs those who actually fit the definition to the letter of being taken as seriously as they ought to be. Someone with an extreme case of ADHD will struggle in an environment not tailored to their speed and potentially thrive if given the means to teach themselves.

It's largely a way to sell pills, and it's far too easy to get that diagnosis. I've also had that label thrown at me before from someone who was quite unprofessional.

And the only reason I took him to a doctor is because his sleep is affected. I need to know how his brain is responding to stimili in his environment.  Otherwise I wouldn't want him labelled.

What can I say? I have a soft spot for sincere people who show up here trying to help their families. It's a refreshing break from the usual garbage that people frequently spew on this forum.

NPD is quite rare. If you ask a random group about how it's affected their lives, most of them will say "Huh? Idk what that is. But I had a neighbour once who was schizophrenic/bipolar/ very strange but Idk what his problem was."

There is plenty of online discussion about it, but I've never met anybody IRL who was formally dx'ed with NPD. I've only met 2 people who could possibly come under scrutiny for some kind of narc disorder, but they were both tenured profs at my uni. So it's just as likely that they were just self centered assholes.

I know how that is. I discovered this not too long ago.

It would seem I'm on about a 27 hour sleep cycle. I probably won't bother with doctors right now, tho. I've figured out how to compensate for my sleep disruptions with calculated all nighters and lots of coffee.

I would not recommend my sleep strategies for a child. Yes, sleep disturbances are a good reason to seek expert help for your boy. I'm not sure what the doctors usually do for people like us.

How old is your son?
