Should users have the option to completely wipe their account, and all their postings?

what do you guys think? are the posts that are here... are they here for all of history.. the legacy of SC? or should users have the option to delete their whole account, and all it's postings in 1 button?

i personally think that we have a legacy, and if things start getting deleted (beyond spam), our past gets distorted. this place is a place for free discussion, but isn't it also a place for anyone else, no matter how many years into the future, to come and observe the culture of humans in a habitat such as this?

also, there is the ability to edit your posts, so if someone cared so much, they could simply edit out all their posts.

i ask because i have on occasion gotten this request, to delete an account and all it's postings. i've never said yes, but wanted to get yalls opinion

like = users cannot delete their accounts

dislike = users should be able to delete their accounts

Not only would that ruin the fun for everyone, but it could also cause problems with losing accounts. I'm sure certain profiles here have been hijacked in the past, so I really don't think the hijacker should be given the option to delete the existence of a user.

Well, if they are caught in legal implications, I think they should at least have that power. Or maybe they could just approach you with the problem and you could assess whether it is worthy of deleting the whole archive of posts or not.

Do you know how much someone who hacks accounts could abuse that? There'd need to be a means of recovering them as well.

I'm mostly against it because the posts that remain would largely lack context, so the place would make little sense, but the sheer abuse potential has me actually dread that being implemented. Check a topic with a lot of dot posts, the others talking become harder to follow.

Now, I see nothing wrong with deleting accounts, that could grant more room for users to grab the name they want, but the posts under that name before it's deletion ought to remain, even if it's their username with [DELETED] in place of their post count.

i rather enjoy watching people go through the trouble of manually editing out all 600 posts they have made

nothing beats seeing nameless and faceless forum avatar being ashamed of their existence

that up there is all you needed to say to whoever requested it...your whole post is slanted toward not allowing it..

Say no without making everyone else say it for you...
