My ex boyfriend moved in with me for a year, I paid the rent, I bought the food, and I supported his endless need for marijuana. He sat around on his ass all day and never got a job, even when I was working two. Why I put up with it for so long is beyond me, but you get where I'm going with this. : P

That's... what makes it a handout.
Ah. I never really considered it a 'handout', but I see what you mean.
Nothing wrong with getting stuff for free, be it money or anything else.

I really don't understand how some people can value a dirty, smelly animal over a human being.
Animals are good natured and more loyal than human beings. There's no evilness in them and if they hurt a human being, it's because of their own instincts.
Sometimes, I see images of humans suffering and honestly, I feel nothing, but when I see an animal in pain, I feel more upset,

You've obviously been hurt by someone over the years.
Try getting bit by a dog and see how that feels. Mind you, I've never been bitten by one myself. Been growled at a few times though.
I've been attacked by birds, cats and even a fucking goat once.
Is why you get reptiles instead. Aside from temperature, they're so low maintenance. Snakes, feed them every week or so. Lizards, shove a bunch of live crickets in the cage and it's entertainment for 10-20 minutes.
Otherwise, they don't need or want your cuddly bullshit.
And telling people you own snakes is a great people-repellent.
