Personal Lethality and Self-Defense

One of my most prioritized values is being self-efficient. Having the ability to defend myself and attack others is something I see as a must. I don't see how people today walk around vulnerable and soft without a care in the world.

So my question to you is how have you prepared yourself(capabilities wise) for a physical attempt on your life?

I usually carry a knife with me at all times. I also own a gun, though I don't always carry that with me.

I've trained in martial arts - karate, tae kwon do and a mixed style of martial art.

I've also done some training in street self-defense against knives and guns.

Are you talking to me?

I used to live in one of the most violent neighborhoods in my country, as determined by statistics. Square foot for square foot, it was the most violent city block around.

Social housing all around, a halfway house around the corner, a grade school with barbed wire fence( shit you see in the movies ) down the street, and a nudie bar on the corner...

Really, it was a nasty area... fitting in, doesn't really help. If you have anything that looks to be valuable then your in trouble. I learned to keep my pocket change from jingling when walking near people, that's how harassing that neighborhood was.

I mean anything... I got jumped lightning fast because a group of people caught a glimpse of a laptop in my knapsack. If I kept the knapsack shut, no problem, but the second they saw it, they were on me instantly.

Yes, I was teasing you. And yes some neighborhoods should be avoided. I am talking about all around tips. I have walked through a few neighborhoods of my own.

And then you vomited your three martini lunch on him.

Seriously, I think being aware of your surroundings and having common sense is a good defense. Also, an air of self-confidence. Walk like you belong there. Act like you belong there.

I think certain people exude an air of strength and some don't.

The last time a mugger came upto me and sucker punched me, I yelled at the top of my lungs, and it startled the guy enough that I was able to break free and make it towards a busy intersection.

I imagine he was expecting me to fight back, in which case, yeah, that particular guy would have won hands down.

Anyways, this is how he introduced himself to me, "Do you know who I am? I'm Marcus and I blood people up."

I can run really fast...

I used to carry pepper spray, until one day someone cornered me in an elevator with a knife. I emptied my pockets and he tried to spray me but couldn't figure out the safety.

I don't think I will ever try to carry defensive stuff again.

If they still feel like attacking then you didn't do it properly :P

And if they don't choose to retreat?

A lot of people don't like being intimidated. There are quite a few who will stand their ground and challenge you.

...and then what do you do if making someone feel that way just makes them more aggressive?

In such case you have to give them a feeling of being evenly matched with you so that they their ego isn't hurt if they choose to retreat. Then, the moment they walk away, you stab them in the back and scream obscurities.
