LOL, abuse.

I was left to fend for myself a lot.

Neglect is a passive form of abuse in which a perpetrator is responsible to provide care for a victim who is unable to care for himself or herself, but fails to provide adequate care.

Neglect may include the failure to provide sufficient supervision, nourishment, or medical care, or the failure to fulfill other needs for which the victim cannot provide themselves.

Neglect can carry on in a child's life falling into many long-term side effects such as: physical injuries, low self-esteem, attention disorders, violent behavior, and can even cause death.

I would guess a lot of us were neglected to a certain extent.

Neglect is the basis of self-sufficiency. Without it, you will never be able to live for yourself.

That is a positive way of looking at it. That is why I am so independent. 

How certain of an extent?

Times were different. Latch-key kids, no seat belts, no gun control, Etc.

It wasn't like I had no one. Just enough ignoring, verbal abuse and physical abuse to fuck up self-esteem.
