As far as I can tell, they provide a gun shot to the back of the head to the asshole who tries funny stuff...
I am being dramatic...
I do know that I gave my friend a knife as a gift because I worried about her... and she came home one day all excited about how she used it to get out of a car when she otherwise would not have been able to.
You never been stalked from city block to city block? I got this line once, "Where are you headed, I am going up to So and So city and can take you there." I had watched that car stalk me for over 10 city blocks at 3 in the morning.
Let me freak you out a little... Murder statistics are only a small piece of the puzzle. Missing persons, are the stats you want to watch.
I don't know if this source is good... it probably isn't but it's the first one I found...

Reports of missing persons have increased sixfold in the past 25 years, from roughly 150,000 in 1980 to about 900,000 this year. The increase was driven in part by the country's growing population. But the numbers also indicate that law enforcement treats the cases more seriously now, including those of marginalized citizens.
So next time, remember, when you see two homeless people hitchhiking, the guy is there for a good reason...
Ah, I love those frenchies...
