Yes but I think what maria was trying to say (I'm guessing here) is that Narcs don't care about anyone's pain except their own. I disagree. That would imply narcissists have no empathy towards another. 

I meant a narc would take someone's pain and wallowing and try to loop it back to all about them rather than just comfort the person with a similar event they lived through to try and help the person. Who knows. Being a narcissist doesn't mean they have to be lacking conscience and not caring about anyone else completely.

Lack of empathy is a common trait for narcs and sociopaths. It's listed in the narc traits. Agree with the second part of the post though.

I am not some uber-emapth but if someone next to me is crying, (Let's say I am in the bathroom at a restaurant), I would ask why they were crying, feel a sadness that they were sad, and ask if I could help.

It depends a lot on who that person is. At least to me.
