A supposed test of your subconscious

Personally, I find most of the tests out there on this subject to be horse shit. The most legit test of your subconscious personality I've done is here, and even state they can't speak for the validity of the tests. I figured I'd post the following one for fun to see what you guys come up with.

Post your answers before scrolling down to the following post.

Try and answer with the first picture that comes in your head when you read the "describe" questions.

1. One day you decide to go for a hike in the country. After walking for a while, you come to a fork in the road, which way do you decide to go?
- If you go right, you will be led to a wooded valley.
- If you go left, you will be led to a wide open plain.

2. Farther down the path you chose, you suddenly came across a bear, describe what kind of bear it is and what it is doing as you approach it.

3. As you look around, you discover that there is a gun on the ground nearby, what type of gun is it?

4. Do you decide to pick up the gun or leave it on the ground?

5. After making you decision, you continue down the path and arrive at a body of water, describe it in detail (size, shape, color, activity, etc.)

6. Finally, as you stand there looking across the body of water, what lies on the other side of it?

A supposed test of your subconscious

The initial path that you chose to take is said to represent your state of mind and your current willingness to take a chance on the unknown.

If you decided to turn left and travel across the open plains, your subconscious mind is telling you that you may now be ready to explore that new idea or opportunity that has recently presented itself in your life. Even though you realize that there is always a risk of failure, this might be the right time for you to try something new.

If you decided to turn right and travel into the wooded valley, your subconscious mind is telling you that right now you may prefer the comfort of a familiar situation rather than risk exposing yourself to taking any unnecessary risks. By psychologically retreating into the protective covering of the forest, you are indicating a strong desire for security and a need to guard your innermost feelings from others, at least for now.

The symbol of the “Bear” represents how you would typically view strangers or other people you have just met. Think about this for a moment, when you generally meet someone for the first time, do you usually see them as an ally or a potential adversary?

Did you imagine the bear to be large and intimidating (like a grizzly), about the same size as you (psychologically as an equal), or perhaps something much smaller that is easily controlled or manipulated (such as a small bear cub or a stuffed teddy bear). Think about not only what kind of bear it is, but also what the bear is doing (eating, sleeping, attacking, running away, playing, etc..) What might this behavior tell you about your current relationship with others?

The “Gun” that you find lying on the ground is said to indicate how you generally interact with other people whom you already know. What kind of gun is it? If it is a large powerful gun, such as a shotgun or an automatic assault rifle, then you are probably not known for your subtlety when dealing with others. When you walk into a room you want others to notice, and even if you don’t always express it, you want to be the one in charge in any given situation.

On the other hand if the gun you find is only a small pistol or just a toy, you are probably far more receptive to the thoughts and opinions of others. You are confident enough in your own abilities that you don’t always have to have your own way. Generally you are willing to listen to other people’s ideas before making up your mind.

Whether or not you pick up the gun, is said to represent how comfortable you are with this particular aspect of your personality. In other words, do you accept this part of who you are, or do you often find yourself doing one thing while thinking another? For example, those who envision a large shotgun but leave it lying on the ground may be indicating a secret desire for more power in their relationships but they are unwilling to assert themselves. This is known as the passive aggressive personality type.

The “Body of water” that you encounter next is said to symbolically represent how you see the immediate path in front of you. In other words, how difficult is it going to be to get across this body of water and reach your goal on the other side? Did you imagine a gently rolling stream or raging white-water rapids? What might your subconscious mind be telling you about your level of confidence in your abilities to achieve your current goal?

Take another look. How big is this body of water? Is it a small creek that you could easily jump over or is this a vast ocean with no visible land on the other side? The size of the water is itself a symbol that represents how long you believe it will take to get to where you want to go.

Finally, the land that you see on the other side of this water is said to represent your current vision of your goals. Look closely, does the land appear to be an inviting place worthy of your effort to get there, or is it a barren desert with not much to offer?

If this land does not appear to be a desirable place, you may want to ask yourself if it is possible that you are pursuing the wrong path. On the other hand, if the land across the water appears to be full of flowers and lush green fields, it may be your subconscious mind’s way of telling you that it’s time to focus your energy and do whatever it takes to get there.

 6. Finally, as you stand there looking across the body of water, what lies on the other side of it?

-I can't see what's on the other side because it's a damn ocean, but geography has taught me another continent is over there.

1. Right, the wooded valley.

2. A sun bear, just a few inches taller than me. It's up on both hind legs, front paws a bit lower than it's head but extended towards me.

3. Sawed-off shot gun.

4. There's a bear here, I'll pick it up.

5. Large Oval lake, small waves forming at the edges where it touches the land, a dark blue in the middle that turns green as it fans out.

6. Small mountain, or more like a really big hill, covered in fruit trees and has a few deers and birds there.

1. Right
2. Grizzly. Rifling through some refuse and picking out rotted meat.
3. A weathered hunting rifle
4. I pick up the gun, and keep it slung on my side.
5. A small pond, naturally formed because the path has steadily led downhill into the woods. Here, the roots converge and form a sort of mat of root, limestone, and clay which bowls in the accumulation of water. It's a placid green, full of dead and rotting plant matter, and buzzing with gnats, flies, and mosquitoes. The unmistakable scent of bogwater is on the air.
6. A rocky outcropping. Approaching, I see that it descends into the earth. Beyond the threshold where shadow is cast, nothing is perceivable in the black.

Im taking a right, open plains sound boring.

A fucking huge ass grizzly, it is eating a deer.

3. As you look around, you discover that there is a gun on the ground nearby, what type of gun is it?

A m240B, locked a loaded. Can I shoot the bear to little bits now?

4. Do you decide to pick up the gun or leave it on the ground?

How else am I going to shoot the fucker?

5. After making you decision, you continue down the path and arrive at a body of water, describe it in detail (size, shape, color, activity, etc.)

It's a shit lake, brown, can't see through, it smells and maybe a quarter mile wide.

6. Finally, as you stand there looking across the body of water, what lies on the other side of it?

There better be a shower, but everything is on fire, the ground is cracked and dry, I hear screaming in the distance.

I chose a forest of tall trees. Dim light, ground fog.

2. Farther down the path you chose, you suddenly came across a bear, describe what kind of bear it is and what it is doing as you approach it.

Black/brownish bear turning around, looking startled. Our eyes meet comfortably. The bear is standing, its paws in front of its chest.

3. As you look around, you discover that there is a gun on the ground nearby, what type of gun is it?

Colt.

4. Do you decide to pick up the gun or leave it on the ground?

Leave it alone. I don't know how to operate it anyway. Plus, the bear seems frightened of me.

5. After making your decision, you continue down the path and arrive at a body of water, describe it in detail (size, shape, color, activity, etc.)

Lake, organic, dark blue, moving with the winds. Shady, empty.

6. Finally, as you stand there looking across the body of water, what lies on the other side of it?

I see the start of a mountain, bright light shining down on the exit of the forest. It seems like a bright day.

Analysis of my answers:

  1. I had something other in mind when choosing the forest. I believe that these two represented the "big picture" and the "tree in the forest" kind of analogy. In the open field, you can see ahead but for me, there is barely anything to actually observe. An open field would mean vast openness of nothingness, while the forest, granted I can't see ahead more than a couple meters, I observe everything around me. To see ahead but in a blurry path, or to admire the surroundings lost in details. Yet, it reflects how I always tackled things, reserved and painstakingly trying to ignore what stressed me while losing myself in the meaningless details in the bark of the woods. I guess in that sense it does mean that I rather choose my devil-known than a devil to meet.

  2. I guess this makes sense. It is how I perceive people that meet/know me on a superficial level, subconsciously. I have humored this thought many times that they look unable to see through me, and thus, it makes them uncomfortable that I behave in a different way than they have expected of me. Looking at my every move, trying to read what I am about, an element misplaced in their environment. Its paws in front of the bear's chest might tell me the defensive stance they take. The eye level being comfortable, means that we might be of the same height. So I take them as equals yet feel like I am disturbing them.

  3. If the size of the gun determines how comfortable you are with the tools you have to get by, being the smallest equals healthy confidence and humility, then the Colt means that I am sure of my own potential and that I trust in others' input before I step in. The colt I had in mind was a golden one, old western. I also think that choosing an antiquated gun may symbolize that I have a conservative way of dealing with situations. I am subtle; I want people to rely on my skills to bring the projects to a higher place, but I don't want to take the lead. I believe in team-spirit.

  4. I rationalized not picking up the gun. I have no intentions on getting rid of a bear who is afraid of me. I want it to see I mean no harm, that I come in peace. There is nothing more that I want in that forest than to keep going my way. The bear seemed afraid and backed away. Why would I hurt someone who seems to be in distress? There was no need to pick a gun I didn't know how to use. I don't need brute force to make things work. According to the second post, if I chose a bigger gun, it would mean passive-aggression. Smaller weapon, choosing not to pick up the humility and confidence shouldn't mean that I don't like listening to people, taking into account their distresses and their motivations. I think choosing not to use the Colt means that I am confident enough to not force something down the throats of people. Passiveness? Probably. I like to await for the blocks to allocate on their own, unless one of the pieces is stuck and requires a bit of a push from me. I don't need to have a gun as a reaction to a situation.

  5. This one is pretty straight-forward for me. I have thalassophobia, fear of masses of water -more deep dark water than anything. The lake I was seeing was turbulent and dark, just like the body of water I fear so much. Would this mean that I can't get through this obstacle because of the intense fear I feel? If it was "imagine an obstacle" instead of "imagine a body of water", maybe I would have thought of something less stressful. I would have to go through the lake, shaken and erratic. Overcoming a phobia is a long process of conditioning; if I get through this lake, it means that I will be a changed person, a stronger person than what I was before because I will be able to get through any lake with ease.  Maybe I will have to panic in it a couple of times before I am able to get through it without paying mind to how tedious it is, to how empty it looks and how long it spans. Instead of focusing on how long it's going to take, why not focus on what will be found on the other side.

  6. I see the foot of a mountain. For me, it means that even if I get through the pain of overcoming the lake, there is still a road to walk. No time to stop, no time to look back. The mountain seems steep, but is lit brightly under the sun. Maybe I am addicted to challenges. Maybe I just don't let myself catch a breath. Maybe it means that I see the chance to keep going forward rewarding enough. Maybe it means that no matter what I go through, I will never see the end of the road. Who knows.

A supposed test of your subconscious

1. I go right, into the woods.

2. I come across a brown bear, it's nothing special. I can't tell what it is
doing until I get closer, I see it is probably a very young bear as I
see it eating berries from a bush, as you expect any bear would.

3. I see a handgun, because I know nothing of handguns all I can say is that it is small, heavy metal, loaded, and black.

4. I pick it up, are you fucking kidding me?

5. A massive, clear lake, teeming with food. It is round in shape, but not perfectly of course.

6. Someone I feel is dear to me, valuable treasure, and a bar.

EDIT: That was much more accurate than I expected!
