I'm a big fan of the Anthony Hopkins Lecter, but I find the Mads Mikkelsen one more compelling now. There's something about the emptiness inside and the pure 'force of nature' like destruction Mikkelsen conveys. I especially love the therapy sessions between Graham and Lecter in Season 2. I find them beautiful and tastefully and meticulously crafted. Opinions? Comments?
If I may, which part of the therapy sessions did you like? Any one comment or line that resonated with you? I liked the parts where he talks of being true to your nature. And I found the dark humor in 'the meat is bitter that it's dead' amusing. Mikkelsen is more nuanced as Lecter but to be fair, he plays the part of Lecter's life when he had to pretend to be normal. Hopkins had to play him once he was already confined for seven years in a cell and he could let go and be 'him' to anyone and everyone. Less of a need to be subtle with his behavior..
I could write an essay on this but I wont at this moment and just weigh in that I strongly preferred Mikkelsen's performance. He is actually closer to the books in how he acts and thinks. While Anthony Hopkins is closer in terms of looks he seems almost gitty and excited a bit too much.
Started watching season 1 of hannibal recently. They try hard to make it disturbing for the public :D Mikkelsen's Hannibal is a plausible psychopath so far, in my opinion. I expect the female and gay population to prefer him over Hopkins anyway.
Mads. He decapitates Hopkins in any competition they have. He has a much stronger presence that is mysterious and sexually and emotionally alluring. I would not say he is "subtle" as he seems to be more intense in his predatory instincts.
But I love most the fact that he speaks about various motifs and symbols. He speaks metaphorically in therapy and at once has a more feminine aspect to him.
I'm curious how the whole bisexual thing came up with him. It appears he acts more like a "God" for Will. He cares about him deeply based on their shared experience of killing. Yeah, he has a God Complex and the teacup is used to demonstrate that. Or being true to one's nature, letting it free because it is their.
Idolatry?
Good luck with finding yourself.
Keep worshiping until then.
Perhaps one day you will see the human reality for what it really is. Until then keep piecing together the mystery of people who do not seem to be there.
And please do not fall into the trap of thinking that what is not there can be found if you dig deeper.
Never seen anything Hannibal so i can't comment. Only seen Mikkelsen as a cop, fine actor. His brother too, as prime minister (The Killing 1), also good.
However, my favourites in the genre are the coroner in The Bridge, and Brix (The Killing) - must look up the actors.
