I couldn't agree more. You kill a person in a movie everyone's, "Cool, did you see the way his brains sprayed on the wall", but you kill a dog and you'll hear sniffling for the next 15 minutes.

I always thought it was from the idea that a person ought to have seen it coming, while an animal lacks a conscious choice in the matter, the innocence factor.
