I've hurt a lot of people throughout my life and I acknowledge it. Does that mean I'm not a sociopath? Sometimes I wonder whether I have a conscience or if I simply avoid doing more harmful things because I don't wanna suffer the consequences of my actions.

If you are avoiding doing harmful things and see them as 'wrong' or 'bad' because they hurt people, then you have a conscience.
You would know if you're only avoiding things because you don't want to suffer the consequences.

Good points, but the first one could be either / or as well. Not hurting others doesn't require a conscience but the awareness that your actions will cause them pain. To refrain from doing so is control. In the end it benefits both. Depends the situation and context as ever.
