Becoming "The Best"

I'm really good at almost everything I do. I don't say this to feel superior or because I need recognition, but rather because I'm realizing something: being good at stuff without really having to try has made me both lazy and easily bored. And therein lie the roots of my 'disordered' mentality. Have any of you noticed a similar trend, and if so, did you accept it or try to change it? Studies say that the bench line for being an expert at anything is roughly 10,000 hours of doing it. If I could just match my level of effort to my talent, I could make a real impact.

If you've tried similarly to change your nature, what were your results?

To be good you need a passion.

If your interest is lacking, you can never improve. You will become so good and that's that. To be good you need both the passion and the talent.

I don't believe you can really change who you are. If you don't have what it takes, you don't.

I have the exact opposite problem. I'm good at a lot of things, but everybody seems to think that I need a husband more than I need to keep working to improve myself. lol

Ask anybody here. Betcha not more than 3 people could tell you what I'm good at ;)

I don't think I would have the motivation to do over 10,000 hours of something without being paid for it. There needs to be some sort of reward, otherwise it's a lot like hard work, whereas I'm always looking for an easier way of doing something. Anything would be boring after that time, but maybe I just haven't found anything I enjoy enough yet.

We don't need another thread devoted to your personal drama.

lol.

Not my drama. I do what I do and everybody else causes drama around me.

If you don't want drama then don't start it.

yes actually i can understand you completely and i am gonna fail uni if i dont step up my lazy ass. i do perfect on subjects that interest me and i dont even try on the rest and i get a 50% success rate on those i dont even try.

i just dont attend a lot of my uni classes

i expect to be good at things if i try to do them. maybe after the 3rd attempt. then i try to be nearly perfect, because i can and i like it

so far i change really slowly in this aspect. i even consider dropping uni and just getting a job in the field i want to, but i actually start to recognize the value of the subjects that bore me and that might make me learn them.

I definitely agree that there needs to be some kind of reward (either financial or otherwise). Three things that I'm fairly good at already could be easily monetized.

My current thinking is that I'd have to set some sort of schedule; block out time for each activity that I'd like to get better at. I am indeed passionate about these things, but given an unstructured day to myself I'd likely just end up online, watching TV, or maybe biking. When I can force myself to stick to a plan for a day, I am much more clear-headed at the end of it, and some simple tests on myself have suggested that I'm actually smarter and process things faster when I've utterly exhausted myself trying to be productive. So there's a distinct advantage. I just need to find an appropriate motivation -- or at least turn it into a game I can win.

Metaerg, if you can motivate yourself just by reminding yourself of the importance and use of certain subjects, you're a better person than I. If something doesn't interest me I just don't do it. Bad for Uni, but then I always skated through my general end courses anyway because usually they just required you to show up for the exams. Glad to hear that you, at least, have made some progress with this, however slow. I think I'll attempt it.

My mind went straight to Pokemon as well. You beat me to effectively giving the same answer.

I guess an Isosine link will suffice:
