Living Off the Grid

by Gypsy

When I was a kid we were homeless for a bit, and I can't honestly say it prepared me for anything except for ultimate appreciation of the creature comforts I enjoy now.

Soup kitchens in a dystopian wasteland... it reminds me of that series on the discovery channel with those people preparing for the end of the world, where they store six months' worth of food in a fifth floor apartment and don't give any thought to what they're gonna do when the toilet stops flushing.

How did you manage to survive (I mean, apart from the fact that you had access to soup kitchens)? Were you living out of a car or something?

Blah. Long story. Sadly no, I didn't finish my degree.

I'll give you the rest of the story over PM later tonight when I have more time. That will be some time between lunchtime and dinnertime where you are ;)

I'm curious about self-deprecation (see? When Gen Ys aren't all bad. ) I admit that it does make me feel a little uncomfortable but that's probably because I've never had an honest conversation about it with anyone before.

I know that self-deprecation means different things to different people. What does it mean to you? What are your limits?

Shiiiiiit. Sorry about that. I hope you do get to finish your degree one day, just so that you can say you did it.

I'm not entirely sure (I was very young at the time and just have vague memories, my sister remembers it a lot clearer than I do). I guess homeless was a bit of an exaggeration as we usually had somewhere to sleep at night. It was a different place each night though, usually mates of my mum. Sometimes we'd go to the airport or train station and pretend to be waiting for a flight or a train. To be fair, my mum did a good job of presenting it as a fun adventure, so I don't remember it as being a particularly bad experience.

Most people (where I live, anyway) do usually have a building to sleep in, even if the location of that building is subject to change, so saying that you were homeless isn't a total exaggeration. At least your Mum did a good job of making light of the situation. Many people would've gone to pieces over it.

It was a infantry training exercise meant to hone one's resourcefulness and survival skills. I was to be out in a remote swamp for 4 days. I was given 2 MRE meals(what you'd eat through in a average day) and a radio. Of course I brought my own personal gear such as my knife, some 550 cords and biography of Julius Caesar to pass the time.

I was midway through the 2nd afternoon and I was walking towards this fallen over tree, looked like a nice place to sit down and read. There was a piece of soggy, wet dirt that upon me placing my boot over it, turned into a small pit. I thought nothing of it besides the immediate discomfort it gave me. So, I kept rationing my food and reading about Caesar crossing the Rubicon until it started to get dark.

The night was terrible, there are 4 poisonous snakes in America and they all reside within the swamps of North Carolina. I ran across one of these fuckers and a plethora of terrifying imsects, which prompted me not to sleep with any part of my body exposed. I wore a balaclava, gloves and my boots to sleep to give me some piece of mind, otherwise I probably wouldn't have slept.

I didn't notice how bad my foot had gotten until I got out of there, I had a mild case of Immersion foot, that took me around 2 months for my foot to look normal again.

Memories right? So glad I'm a reservist.

Anyone tried it?

...I mean, not NOW, obviously, as you're clearly logged into the internet somewhere, but I mean, have you lived off the grid in the past?

If so, how'd you find it?

Could always be logged on from a wifi hotspot, at times when you return to civilization for whatever reason.

I have, before I met my boyfriend. It was rough at first, but it really wasn't that bad. At least not if you have basic survival skills and actually get into the woods.
