Living Off the Grid

Anyone tried it?

...I mean, not NOW, obviously, as you're clearly logged into the internet somewhere, but I mean, have you lived off the grid in the past?

If so, how'd you find it?

Yes. It sux.

I wouldn't recommend it for anything short of a zombie apocalypse.

Really? Is it the lack of convenience, the lack of funds (potentially) or both?

Both. I lived between my storage locker, a fully confidential temporary shelter (no ID required) and couches in the student lounge when I was in uni. Finding hot meal programs was difficult enough. Getting into a shower 3-4x/ week was like pulling teeth.

If you spend too much time in one place people start to ask awkward questions about who you are and why you're there.

And there are perverts everywhere. No doubt they intentionally stalk soup kitchens looking for somebody to fuck. ICK.

Also, most of the programs that offer free food and showers are designed for drug addicts. Drama from all sides.

However, my experience has given me full confidence in my ability to survive at least 2 years in the unlikely event that the Chinese stage a hostile takeover, or zombies consume civilization, or any other disaster that might leave my country a dystopian wasteland.

Just because you were homeless doesn't guarantee your survival.  Even the most avid preppers place their life span in a apocalyptic event at around 6-7 months. Did you hunt?

No I didn't hunt. But I'm pretty sure I could learn in a hurry if I had to.

I didn't say I believed in guarantees. Nothing is guaranteed.

I said I'm confident.

I live where there are plenty of resources if there is a natural disaster, etc. There are definately fringe groups in my state.

I am sure there are people with stockpiles of food and weapons. WEEE!

Spend one week in the wilderness without having any manufactured supplies.

You'll see how vulnerable humans are. How something as simple as rain can incapacitate you if your not planned.

I was in a remote area when my foot got wet, I had no material or shelter to dry them off. Within 2 days infection set in, my feet are still damaged from that incident.

When I was living in China, I volunteered at this police academy for young police cadets. The academy was nice becasue it was funded by the Chinese government, and around it was rice fields, and it was basicly countryside. It was completely off grid, but it did have electricty. Still no internet or cell.

I basicly smoked weed every morning, then taught classes, and then smoked in the afternoon for lunch, and then taught classes into the evening. It was so much fun becasue I just got ot get stoned and hang out with these police cadets who all were studying English. By teaching I don't mean it was really formal.. mostly we just hung out, and memorized together whatever the leaders said they should memorize. I just helped them pronounce the words really, but it was awesome!

Best off grid experience ever!
