My family goes through a phase of stockpiling plastic bags and reused gift wrap, till the whole house looks like a recycle bin.

It is completely natural.  Everyone does it.  And no, you will never outgrow it.  Someday you will drown in a gargantuan heap of reused gift wrap, and meet your end therein, as all mortals inevitably must.
