Does life have value?

End

In philosophy and ethics, an end is the ultimate goal in a series of steps. For example, according to Aristotle the end of everything we do is happiness. It is contrasted to a means, which is something that helps you achieve that goal. For example, money or power may be said to be a means to the end of happiness.

Intrinsic value is an ethical and philosophic property. It is the ethical or philosophic value that an object has "in itself" or "for its own sake", as an intrinsic property. An object with intrinsic value may be regarded as an end.

It is contrasted with instrumental value (or extrinsic value), the value of which depends on how much it generates intrinsic value. For an eudaemonist, happiness has intrinsic value, while having a family may not have intrinsic value, yet be instrumental, since it generates happiness.

Do you believe that happiness is an end? Do you believe that Humans by default have intrinsic value? If so, are these beliefs generally good or bad for the whole of Humanity in the long term? Why?

Does life have value?

We as Humans exist in an ever-changing and hostile Universe. If one is ever to become "fullfilled", I doubt they would last long here.

I think the appropriate question is.. Does a Human who's made a contribution to Humanity from which Humanity will be able to prosper for years to come-- have more value than a Human who does nothing but watch TV all day?

I think current Christian views would argue that each life has equal value. I think this is limiting factor of our society today. The fact that some lazy, unmotivated individual is able to consider his or herself of equal value to someone actively contributing to society.

Christian cultural views are out dated though. The meta has changed.

In the past, we existed in a society that was able to segregate itself from others, and as a result life in a world they enjoy. With capitalism taking over the world, though, this is no-longer the case. Currency is needed to hold and maintain possessions.

Though this system of currency applies some restrictions to the ways in which we can navigate this world, it also introduces many opportunities. For example, we see that since the 1900s, capitalism has had a large effect on the global economy.

We as a society can choose to embrace capitalism, and structure our society in such a way that we can continue to progress technologically, and offer improved ways from which to address the Human condition.

Or we can continue to be irrational. Demanding that our own happiness is the only thing that has importance, and everything else is simple a matter of perception.

I'd also like to make the argument that the reason the top 1% are making so much than the bottom 99% is simply becsaue most humans choose not to participate in capitalism. They instead, prefer to do what they are told by some manger. They prefer to work hourly or on salary, and simple fulfill the objectives they are told. I would call this a present-hedonistic lifestyle which seems to revolve around the "family" and supporting their future instead of supporting our own future. Though this seems a noble thing to do, it teaches the wrong lessons to children.

No individual is likely to become a part of the 1% from this life direction yet so many choose this path? Why is the 1% to blame?

No child, I feel, should choose to dedicate their life doing as someone else says. Yet this is the norm? This is one of the biggest problems society faces.

Simply put, too many people don't have confidence in themselves. They don't wish to take risk. That.. or they are simply lazy. Unambitious. They place higher value in social values than they do financial values. This is fine. It is their choice. They will not get ahead though.

That's the problem with this capitalistic model, placing life value in a piece of green paper rather than humanity.

That green paper is nothing more than an idea. We give it value.

Life has value, if you value it.

If you don't, it doesn't.

It's really hard to take you seriously considering we know you spend a good bit of time playing video games and smoking whenever you want/can and that is generally viewed as lazy. My major problem with all this is what gives you the right to determine who is unworthy versus who is in society.

Edit: I'm on my phone, I'll come back to this when I can type correctly.
