Of course there are several types of defense. The Freudian types are just BS though, most of them. And there is no freaking id, ego or superego in your brain. Do a freaking brain scan and see...

You buy a brand new BMW with all the bells and whistles.  You come out from work alongside important business associates to see a guy shitting on your hood.  You are armed with a handgun.  Just a few steps would end this guy's life (unzip, grap, point, and aim).  You want to murder him for dumping a monster load on your hood (id); you start imagining it but then start imagining yourself behind bars, beaten by his family members (ego); then you realize it is just shit on a hood and can be wiped off, besides a shitloaf is not worth 50-75 years of your life and/or a life with you away from your kids, family, etc. (superego).

One crazy thing about "defense" is it's not really defending anything. Calling it sloppy thinking or bad habits makes much more sense.

I'd argue Freud was just victim of a limited sample of patients alongside being a product of his era. Were he born in this day and age, he'd have founded an entirely different set of principles I'd imagine.

He'd be in jail for drugs.
