Mirroring

I had a counselling session for the first time last week and the counsellor spent the whole time mirroring me. I moved an arm he followed suit, I crossed my legs at the ankles, etc, etc. Is this normal if any of you have had any sessions. I might have to tell him next time because I started making motions just to get a reaction. I suspect this defeats the purpose of the session if I spend it playing a game of body language.

It's common knowledge that mirroring someone is supposed to make them trust you more.  Of course, this only works if it's subtle and unnoticeable.  I'd definitely call him out next time just for the fun of it.

Unless he is insinuating that you have a PD that mirrors.

My psychiatrist has the smell of food in her office right before she has an anorexic client.

I don't see how you couldn't try to mess with someone who does that. Do some kind of unnatural movement like The Wave and call him out on what he's doing if he does it as well.

Sometimes in the name of progress (or boredom), calling them out on things they're doing can be the way to go. Let them know who they're dealing with.

Nah, be more subtle.  Do nervous body language like running fingers through hair or biting lip or chewing thumb nail.  If he mirrors, he will feel nervous.  If he moves in like predator, open eyes wide and absorb then retaliate.

It depends if you want them to know that they're wasting their time, or if you want them to keep doing those behaviors.

When it was my brain being picked at, I would just call out what tactics were being used as I saw them (she even tried to dress provocatively one time to lower my guard, it was sad). By the end of it, I understood more about her from how easy it became to turn the tables, while the data she had on me were things I'd tell anyone used as a means of learning how she'd respond, how she feels about things.

Your idea sounds more fun, but calling out their games can leave them off balance. I guess it depends on the one reviewing you (who I had was a control freak, so taking the control away from her was fun).

I've never trusted a psychiatrist because they are either perverts or fake.

Maybe if I didn't try to fuck with them so much they could have helped me but past is past.

I've learned more from random school teachers than from psychiatrists.

I guess it depends on what you want out of therapy.

"I've never trusted a psychiatrist because they are either perverts or fake."

I've met some who were effective, but they had either disorders themselves or in their family. Those who substitute study in place of life experience, instead of combining them and pursuing both, are more likely to see it as sicknesses instead of traits.

You get what you want out of therapy if both you and they are capable.
