In the book 'The sociopath next door', Dr. Stout defines the sociopath as someone who lacks conscience.

Conscience, as she defines it, is 'a sense of obligation ultimately based in a emotional attachment to another living creature'.

What do you think of this definition?

Also if you have read the book, what is your opinion?

It's a great book, believe me. I've read a few pages of it and it was truly a great experience, I plan to read the whole thing in December, when the coldest days of the year arrive.

I haven't read the book.

I'm not sure what the statement (below) means...

'a sense of obligation ultimately based in a emotional attachment to another living creature'.

Could you define it?

I needn't see or know who I harmed to experience a guilty conscience.

Would that still be considered emotional attachment for another creature ? It sounds opinionated to me. At this point I'm still forced to concur with that definition.

I listened to a quarter of it. It sounded bias and cocky, maybe cause it's designed to uplift those who are victims of sociopathy. Make them less worried. It seems like an ok introduction before moving onto a personalized point of view.

Do you feel compelled to feed your daughter?  (I think you said you had one)

A feeling that you must do something for someone.

Does that help to understand what the author meant?

I define conscience differently, without placing judgment on it.

The conscience is like the neutral calculator, which decides based on 0 or 1, true or false, this over that choice.

What is the key is how the conscience is programmed to make decisions.

So just because a certain sociopath may be designed or programmed to kill or whatever, does not mean the conscience doesn't exist. it means it has karmic conditioning or programming within that conscience that compels such person to act.

CLARIFIED it, thanks TC. it does not mean "a" as in "all sociopaths"

it means the level 1 sociopath on my scale where that  person has no control or choice in this drive to do things

it means a particular case where this is driving the person with no choice in the matter, which is rare
