Ego: its pitfalls and benefits.

So why the need to keep up a self-image legga?...what does that achieve for you in your every day lifestyle?

Is it because your ego goads you to portray yourself as something more , or better than what you feel you are in your own eyes?

And would it be fair to say that you you dislike the egotistical people because its something you dislike intensely in yourself??

also, do you not feel that your acheivements are an extension of yourself?..or are they part of the false self-image you portray to mask the real you?.

I think it's natural to be somewhat egotistic/egocentric, it's tied with the self-preservation instinct that every individual has. If you're a narc, your ego blinds you and you fail to correct yourself and grow. If you have a healthy ego, and yeah, some pride too, and ambition - those can motivate you not to "appear better" but to actually be better.

From a personal pov, my ego helps me to become better at some things, because failure is not a very pleasant option. I hate to have my pride wounded, so I try to be as good as I can, and disappoint myself and others as little as possible.

I don't really understand my ego at all. It feels like a vague concept.

Love this topic to no end- too scattered to contribute to it in a legible way unfortunately. Maybe when the storm clears...

When  a child comes into this world it has no sense of self. All senses are tied up in what is outside the self. You only know you have a body because it gets hungry,  has needs to be met. Once the body's needs are met, your senses go back to focusing on what is outside. Ego is born of reflection. It begins with mother and father. What do their faces tell the baby? If a baby has no outside to reflect what it is to this world, it remains an animal. Ego pulls us from the animal into society, and tells us what we must do to be of value to it, so we can survive. How the ego grows and changes, depends on the many reflections it's given while it developes. And with so much reflection comes the complexity and conflict. Still, ego comes down to one thing, that which is outside of self. So how is self reflection born?

I've thought about how the ego develops. It's interesting. Thanks for your thoughts, I enjoyed reading this.

I was going to write more, but I'm far too manic to organize my thoughts, and articulate them for more than 10 minutes or so. I think I put down the meat of my point though. If I have another clearing in my cognition, I will rush back here and get it down.

ok , a tardy response legga, Ive been busy of late.

Do you judge people based on their achievements?

To a degree , yes. Actions speak louder than words in many situations. A person who backs up what they say , carries more weight than one who doesnt with me.

How do you compare yourself to other people?

I try not to, and am happy being myself, whatever or whoever that may be.

Do you believe you have any value just by being yourself?

Value to who exactly?. To myself?..or to my friends and loved ones?

Do you think your ego makes you act rationally?

As Ed pointed out  , ego can make us want to better ourselves, for whatever reason or incentive. If that bettering ourselves helps us to achieve what we wish for/ desire , then that has to be a beneficial thing yes?

I think the ego has the power to make anyone act either rationally, or irrationally. It depends on the reasons the ego comes into play?
