Two reasons why the forum is dying and how to fix

I've been a member of many forums over the last 10 years and I've seen a lot of them crumble and die, and I've seen a few that have stood against the test of time and remained somewhat lively.

So here's the main problems this forum has

Problem 1. Pointless threads

There is an overabundance of them and there always is on dying forums. When new members and anons come onto this forum for the first time and see the amount of random garbage on the front page, they don't feel compelled to stay. The board needs to be mostly full with engaging threads.

How to fix -

There needs to be a new rule on the forum that a thread must have substance to it, or something that asks a question or starts a discussion about something remotely interesting, and the subject must be something that doesn't already have a number of threads posted about it.

If people complain about their rights to freedom of speech being taken away, then you can create a general chat thread that people can go to post whatever random stuff that they want.

If you implement this rule, then each member may find at least a portion of the threads somewhat interesting and feel like posting in on a few discussions, rather than seeing the odd thread every now and then that's squished next to a bunch of garbage. It will also make the board look far more interesting than it does now, where there's just crap like "should I have toast for dinner?". That sort of post should be on a general chat thread, so all the random stuff isn't clogging up the boards and making it look like a complete mess.

Pointless threads as well as threads from attention seekers including things like "So long you fuckers, I'm going", should be deleted. No one gives a shit if you are leaving, just leave, don't tell us all about it.

2. Threads about other members.

We shouldn't allow threads that target specific members. No one likes coming on to this forum and seeing a bunch of people bitching about each other. It doesn't look good to new members who don't know what the fuck is going on at all.

How to fix -

The general chat thread is again another way to fix this. If you want to whine on about how much of an asshole Luna is, then you can do it in general chat, rather than taking the time to clog the board up with another stupid thread crying about something.

If there's no rules or any moderation then the board just dies. No one wants to be restricted, but completely open forums usually fail.

RE 2. addressing issues with specific members

Luna is adding PM which will help. Chat depends on ppl being online at the same time. I've seen that used more to promote ganging up and division instead of reconciliation which would fill up chat and block it for other users.

Real resolution work takes PM and usually mediation with help of friends on both sides. Not for chat, maybe PM.

Until we get PM, there's nothing wrong with ONE thread to resolve all issues with that ONE person. See Sensy's Yay or Nay thread with issues on me and you'll see that Luna worked out a lot of other issues in general with other ppl also.

So it wasn't "all about me" but that one thread not only helped me, but was used to hash out a lot more stuff that helps the whole community.

Since one member may have gotten blocked from hacking or troll threads, not sure, I will ask if there is any way to have an unconnected dungeon or jail section hosted separately, where that member can still communicate with SW friends. The SW members could visit banned members while in the jail/dungeon who don't have direct access to SW.

If something like that could be done that protects the main SW site/server, maybe that jail/dungeon section could be use to experiment with new ideas BEFORE proposing new features on the main site. If people see how something can work without moderation, it can be troubleshot and perfected first before asking about making changes here.

Do you like that idea?

I think there are ways to resolve the fails without moderating the main forum which can remain mixed.

But one change at a time, Luna just worked out some issues, and hasn't added PM yet which will help a lot.

I feel as though the forum is not what it used to be. Maybe the crowding of idiots. Maybe the fact that we don't always want to stay "on subject." Who really gives a rats ass about a sociopath? There isn't much to say about them because there isn't much too them. Branching off and creating different threads helps. Some threads do quite well. Some threads cause serious debates. The current status of the thread is forcing people to be more open minded and think outside of the box. If others join in and do not like what they see, maybe it is because they are too shallow to understand?

I'm not saying we should keep threads to one specific topic or put a harsh limit on the things we can talk about.

I'm all for diverse discussions, but then there's threads that take it too far and are too random and stupid, in my opinion, to have threads made about them.

There's seeing things that you're not interested in then there's seeing thinks like "I like turtles".

Holy shit this forum sucks. And that's how you make a forum suck.

This forum is not even developed yet. The chat is being improved and PM will be added later, also profiles.

Why not join in the discussions and add your ideas? I don't even know you yet, C'mon!

Also, I haven't added you on the ROLL CALL of members, if you would like to be listed by age M/F etc.

If you want to add a post describing your background or interests, see other thread for Profiles.

http://luna.soulcreative.org/topic/2013-11-13/instant-classics-posts-pwns-profiles#46249

It's asking members like you to write up short bio's or list your favorite links that show your sense of humor or interests. And by the time the real Profiles are added you'll already have thought through and written out most of what defines you.

Would you like to start there?

What I've also noticed is how quickly threads descend into bitching because people have no filter on their emotions and egos here.

Someone posts something that offends someone or hits their ego and they feel the need to respond with something childish.
