I find your question interesting. I'll do my best... Pi is a nickname for ' Piscine' - which is french for swimming pool. His parent named him after a pool and I can't remember exactly why. Like they were holidaying there and fell in love with the place or something like that.
BUT Pi as in 3.14 - is really fucking interesting and I think you are bang on. It is no coincidence that his name is Pi from the mathematics perspective. The irrational number - or infinite. There's symbolism here I don't understand it but it's like > what we can prove vs what can know. I think he is relating this to the existence of god.

Ohhh Hyper - you just fucking crushed me - "Life of Pi" - It was a blockbuster movie last year I think, and I have to admit, I scratched my head and said how will they turn this into a movie??? I read the book I think about 10 years ago when it first came out and it helped my immensely, -- what I got out of it is probably not the message tho. I love animals and I related to RichardParker more than any other character in my life.
Anyhow, the movie is really, really well done. It captured the book completely so you can rent it and skip the read if you'd like to know the story. Should it move you in any way and you care to discuss I'm always up for that.
