I like the first design. I'd like to be able to chat and read the forum at the same time.
Dear Luna:
1. I like the chat on the separate tab if the NEW messages/posts can still be accessed there too.
Can it shrink down at the bottom of the screen on that chat tab. I'm sure you've heard this enough
What causes problems is the chat panel blocking the access especially on cell phones.
2. Also could there be a separate tab that has sections for longterm saved posts/lists:
FAQ or any instructions or general info
Members lists for reference
* Archived posts or "Gold Posts" that people earmark for reference (like assessment tests, or advice)
These don't need separate tabs for each one, they can be segmented on ONE tab/screen together
3. It looks like some categories that come up a lot are "relationship abuse/advice" and "religious views"
that can go into greater length than other members feel comfortable skimming through. Thanks for working with the community input to develop the design. this is really great. I will email you separately about sister site ideas that should cross link where they don't compete but draw traffic and hits to the main site if you can set it up that way.
In Design 2, there is a mini-list of the most recent threads that have been posted to, and by clicking on them, you can read the content of the thread in a little box below the list. In the box, you can also click on the arrows to scroll through responses.
In this way, people using the Chat tab can still stay on top of the forum, and not miss anything.

Design 1 is better.
