Community Redesign Competition!

Hi everyone!

Recently, we have had someone take an interest in our web community software after looking at this site, and they have decided to contract our company to develop a web community for them.

In order to ensure the success of our client's community, we will need to add several features to our software. These features include:

Page redesign which includes Chat system.
Profile System
The ability to split the thread list into Sections & Sticky threads
Private Messaging System

The profile system isn't difficult. It will start out generic, and users will be able to modify their profiles. Also, the private messaging system, though certainly a development challenge, isn't difficult design-wise.

For the ability to sticky threads, and create sections, this will be interesting for the forum. I've read in recent threads that the community believes we should have the ability to sticky threads. The question is, without a moderator, who chooses which threads get stickied? Also, the idea of having different sections on the forum has come up. Who chooses what sections are added? These are things that will need discussion.

The largest effect these improvements to our software will have on this community is in the design. Previously, our only objective use of page space was to display a thread list, and a list of online users. Now, we are adding into this a chat. We currently have a crude design which gets in the way of thread lists and thread posts. For this reason, we need to redesign the page to include the chat in such a way that it looks aestheticly pleasing, and idealy doesn't draw too much attention away from the forum itself.

I believe that the Chat has gained popularity recently, and it has resulted in a small drop in the creation of new threads, but we have seen a large increase in the time people spend on the site. It seems the community has split into several groups. Those who enjoy the chat, and those who enjoy the forum, and those who enjoy both. I think this is a good thing. Our community now has the potential to attract both those who enjoy live chat, and those who enjoy forums.

I'd like to introduce the idea of the community coming up with some designs for what they think might be cool. I think it's not really that common to have a community such as this, and even more so, to have a developer and design team so involved within that community, and this creates an opportunity for those who have an idea. I don't think creativity is something that one person has more than another. I think it depends entirely of the mindset of the individual, and I think we all have equal capacity to produce quality, and valuble creative content.

So there you have it! Feel free to submit designs in anyway you like. Personally, I've drawn out 2 wireframe designs of how I personally think the website should move in terms of design direction. If at the time we begin working on this project no new designs have been agreed upon, we will likely use of the two shown below.

Design 1:

Design 2

So as you can see, the first design includes the chat at the top of the page. The Chat area can be collapsed-- which will then bring the thread list to the top of the page.

The other option is to create a new link next to "new topic" called "chat", and this will link to a new page which will include a chat as well as a list of recent posts, and an easy to use tool which allows you to quickly read through posts and responses without leaving the page.

So please feel free to submit your ideas, or discuss!

Long Live Luna!!!!

I kinda sorta like the first design.

I think it would be cool to have the chat thingy detached, so we can move it freely while we lurk in the threads. That way we can keep track of the chat while posting as well, which we all tend to do anyway. xD

Would detaching it be a good idea?

Please keep the background a dark one. I would hate to be blinded with white when coming on here.

Yeah, if the design is going to be changed try and keep the same colour scheme

I'm really happy you guys like the color scheme. I have always enjoyed dark colors. The contrast of white on a black background is so nice to me. I think this dark theme will be used by our company very often in the future.

The program that I used to create these wireframes is quite simple. I wasn't considering colors at all when drawing this, only the basic shapes and functionality.

I have no idea what you mean by detached? Perhaps you mean that you would like to be able to move the chat area about the screen.... if so, that is possible, but what would be the use of that? No matter where you move it, it will always be in the way of something. Why not just possition it in a spot that makes it accessabile, yet doesn't get in the way?

I can understand if perhaps this chat system were a stand along program. Then you could minimize it, or position it on your screen, but this Chat, even if movable, will only be able to move within the limits of the browser's window.

OOOHHH I KNOW I KNOW. With the first design, we can make the chat fixed! :D So the chat is always visible while scrolling.

If we consider the future of this community which is that the entire list of threads will automaticly update just as the chat automaticly displays new data entered by the users. What this means is that users will not be refreshing the website.

Due to this fact, it is safe to assume that users who frequent this forum will glance at the page every once in awhile while at work, or perhaps while surfing the net at home. For this reason, I think it would be a good idea to have a design which presents everything the user might be interested in.

This is represented in both design 1 and 2. In design 1, we see that the chat literally becomes a part of the page. Users who visit the site will find it difficult to not glance at the conversation that is going on. Additionally, we see the thread list below. In the 2nd design, we see the normal design we have today which focuses on the thread list itself. This design makes it easy for users to ignore the chat if they so choose. On the other hand, those who prefer the chat can have the chat the full size of the screen with a small are reserved to notify the user of latest thread posts and replies. This keeps the chatter in the loop with the forum.

I think both options are good solutions to our current problem. The question is weather it will be good for the community. A forum is a unique type of communication system, and it has a unique social structure. When we include a chat, this changes quite a bit I think. I know of quite a few websites which have a chat with their forum, and very often I find that those who use the chat are a completely different group than those who use the forum. Taking that into consideration, it makes me wonder if forum users will find themselves less interesting in the community as less focus is put toward the forum, and more toward instant communication between users.

On the other hand, the increased interaction between users might help to fascilitate lasting, meaningful relationships between users. In this sense, we are using technology to virtually construct a web community which almost simulates the social dynamics of a non-virtual community. With that in mind, the chat might be very healthy for this community as well as future causes who might choose to use our software.

I'm not sure how difficult this would be, but you could have an option where the user decides on one of the two for themselves, so that there isn't a set theme

Bloody mobile's placed the reply in the text, so Rass, do you mean a bit like the design for Facebook chat bar, where its at the bottom small unless you make it larger?
