Do sociopaths like pets?

First, an introduction.  I've had a colleague in my profession for 15 years who helped me get my current job and now he's my department chair.  And suddenly I realize that he is seriously fucked up. Compulsive grandiose liar, no empathy, etc. And now the kicker. He came to my house and ignored my dog and said he doesn't like them.

I'm sure there are plenty of empaths who don't like dogs, but are there any sociopaths who do -- and not for the sake of dog fighting them -- but for their very own sake?

this could be part of the diagnostic criteria.  heheheh

I once read how usually sociopaths don't really like dogs. The dog is very expressive of emotions the sociopath barely believes exists, and the dog loves unconditionally. Why, I'm sure Alex's dog still loved him till it's last breath. Back to this. The dog also comes with chores, like picking up fresh ones, and bathing them regularly cause those dogs are filthy animals and such. Like anyone else collectively, some sociopaths might like dogs, and after floating around here for awhile, I'm under the impression they more often like cats better.

"and bathing them regularly cause those dogs are filthy animals and such."

The Inu Shiba and the Basenji both clean themselves. The lack of barking is quite nice too.

Catdog ? Those must come with a hefty price.

I can't speak for Shibas, but Basenjis are a highly intelligent and very stubborn breed. It feels more like earning their respect when training them (more likely to get results from conditioning), as opposed to having a creature that's eager to please. Even well trained ones try to be sneaky, and they love pushing buttons and testing limits.

I saw one in a dog show once. It tried to steal treats from the other dogs every time it assumed it's owner wasn't looking, even picking up a dropped treat that was dropped during one of those running in a large circle moments.

The nerve of the animal, practicing free will ! My old house mate, the homosexual one, he had 2 Dashounds. One was obediant indoors, while the other one was obediant outdoors. The one who was good outdoors, and by that I mean she never needs a leash and never needs to be called, that one would destroy things when no one was around. One time the dog never noticed I was there, and she literally planted her ass on buddy's shoe like she had to pee, when I called her name I was able to tell how embarrised she felt, cause she knew better. I must be fond of those dogs, but damn, the things they do when they think they can get away with it.

...He probably had a traumatic experience with a dog... or simply didn't grow up with them...

I grew up with pets, and got along great with them... so long as they didn't piss me off... in which case... I made sure they knew I didn't like their behavior... some times in very extreme ways... but for the most part, I adore animals...

I like pets.

I had pets growing up. A hamster and a dog, some breed of terrier. They were some of my first victims. I think about getting a pet every so often, probably a cat, but I know that's not a good idea. For me staying high functioning (my top proirity since I'm a teacher) means minimizing the opportunities to indulge myself and a pet is way too big of a temptation. There's also no sense in spending a few hundred dollars on pet supplies and the animal itself if I'm going to torture it death when I get bored or beat it to death if it pisses me off.

On the other hand, I have a handful of people I'm friends with simply because they have pets. I derive far more enjoyment from their pets than I do them.

I don't mind animals, but I don't like the responsibility that comes with owning them.

I abused almost all, and killed some, of my pets in the past because they pissed me off.

Low frustration tolerance and pets don't go well together.

I knew a kid with a dog he named "Football" that was his kick-toy.

What do you do to other people's pets?
