Agnostic, though I lean more toward the concept of there not being any sort of god...

I was raised with various, although not heavy, christian influences.  I had always tried really, really hard to try and believe in some sort of greater being, but I never succeeded.  This was up until I was maybe around 10 or 11, and then I accepted that I was an atheist.  I'm not sure if I'm remembering this right, or if it's simply the age my peers and I would have been at the time, but I feel that the term "atheist" had a much more negative social stigma attached to it a decade ago than it does now.

I don't understand how people can still be religious in this current day and age. I automatically lose respect for someone if I find out he or she believes in a god.

Religions are just languages for laws. Some people prefer natural laws like science or psychology; some prefer scriptural laws, or civil laws and constitutional laws which are derived from natural laws. It depends on your tribal language.

If you believe there is goodness, truth or love in the world, then collectively that is what God represents; you don't need to believe in "personifying" this as God.

The Earth still exists and works the way it does whether we "personify" earth and the natural laws as "mother earth" or "mother nature." Same with "father time" etc. These laws are universal and work the same way, regardless of expression.

[Also "Jesus" just means "justice" incarnated. Once you understand the "concept" you can see why people have made religious and political gods out of laws of church and state, each calling the other antichrist, fighting for control of justice.]

He isn't even that one dimensional concept at all.  He's the sacrificial lamb, he's mercy, not justice.

I believe religion was created during a time when it would be otherwise difficult to control a large number of people over a large area of land.

Today, we use modern technology to prove a murder and toss the villain in jail. (high success rate, people are afraid of murdering because they're assuming they'll "automatically" be caught and thrown in jail due to the technology we have)

Then, they used religion to control the masses through the human's most effective incentive: fear.  "If you kill another person, you will burn for all of eternity".

And when they add to this by explaining all of the unknowns in the world, then it "must be true".  Too bad the way religion has been explaining things for milleniums are being laughed at by the world today.

I'll stick with logic to guide me

I understand that humans need meaning in life, and religion provides them with it. It's not about manipulating sheep.

There's nothing wrong with getting a little push.
