From what I've seen, a large amount of the furry collective are either very lonely people desperately seeking acceptance, or are somewhat emotionally disturbed. A friend of mine had to deal with one dressed like a dog that went around licking people, while I've seen more than my fair share of the animal trapped in human form types.
It's sad when one's dislike for humanity grows strongly enough that they desperately seek a means to identify with animals instead. Furry communities only strengthen this, especially if among those who refuse to go by anything other than their "fursonas".
I used to have a very outspoken opinion about how furry groups can damage the psyche, since it enables so many unhealthy behaviors and pushes the idea of "becoming the mask" in some to highly unhealthy degrees, even to the point of dissociation from their own identities in extreme cases. I've mostly given up on it now, since it's largely a lost cause to combat it.
