They're made so they can be seen as either way. You can change the way they turn at will, too.

But when I stop actively trying, the cat returns to counterclockwise and the woman to the other way for me. 

I guess I'm not schizo, I can't hold the hollow face in my mind for more than a few moments until it becomes an outwards face, even if I try hard. 

People see that as a face popping out? Weird.

The images from the OP are very disorienting. I swear the proportions keep changing. Kind of hurts to watch.

Edit: Huh, when holding the X in the corner of the browser, the freeze frames are really strange.

Heh. I came back and tried to see it going the other way, now it's going the other way.

After I got the cat to turn the other way, the woman appeared to be counter as well.

EDIT: I have confirmed the gif file is a 34 frame loop without any timed loop changes. So it's legit.

What the fuck... They both rotate clockwise. How can they not, there's no way you can think they are rotating otherwise, unless the image changes the move automatically at some point.

Edit: No, I just saw the woman turn the other way round now. This is kinda cool.

 Exact opposite of that. However, when I look at the cat after looking at the dancer it also goes counterclockwise.
